Why a Non-Judgmental Vocal Coaching Approach Matters
When it comes to learning how to sing, the environment you’re in makes all the difference. I’ve always believed that singing lessons aren’t just about hitting the right notes—there’s a deeper journey involved. It’s about finding your unique voice, expressing yourself fully, and feeling supported every step of the way. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to create a safe, non-judgmental space for vocal coaching that supports every student who walks into my sessions.
I know how intimidating it can feel to start or continue vocal training, especially when you’ve been made to feel that singing is all about perfection. I’ve been in those environments myself, and it’s something I’m deeply mindful of as a vocal coach. When a student steps into my vocal lesson space—whether virtually or in person—I want them to know that it’s a space for vocal growth, exploration, and confidence building. It’s not just about performing or getting everything right—it’s about embracing the process.

Creating a Safe, Supportive Singing Coaching Experience for My Students in a Non-Judgmental Vocal Coaching Environment
I always encourage my students to be open and honest, both with me and with themselves. Mistakes are not failures; they are opportunities to learn. This is why my vocal lessons are structured around celebrating progress, not perfection. In each session, I highlight the small victories that lead to bigger breakthroughs. You may not hit that high note perfectly every time, but if you’ve made progress toward controlling your breath or relaxing your jaw, that’s a win in my book.
This approach creates a sense of comfort and safety during vocal training. As someone who has been on the other side as a student, I know how important it is to feel that you can try new things without fear of being judged. Vocal development is an ongoing journey, and I encourage my students to embrace where they are today, knowing that each lesson is a step toward something greater.
"Have you ever felt nervous or judged in a vocal lesson?"
I’ve been there. As a student, I remember feeling like every lesson was an audition I had to pass. I used to get anxious before each session, worried that if I didn’t do my homework perfectly or didn’t fully understand a technique, it would be held against me. This pressure stifled my confidence and slowed down my progress. Instead of enjoying the learning process, I was focused on not making mistakes.
That experience shaped how I approach vocal coaching today. I make it a point to create an environment free from judgment. As a vocal coach, my job is to guide you through the process, not just instruct or criticise. If something isn’t clicking for you, I’m here to explain it in different ways until it does. We’ll find a solution that works for you without pressure or stress.

Coaching vs. Instructing: A Partnership Approach to Vocal Lessons
My approach is all about vocal coaching, not just instructing. This means it’s a partnership—you are an essential part of the learning process. I encourage my students to meet me halfway by sharing what they want to achieve, how they want to sound, and what genres or styles they love. When you share your goals with me, I can tailor my vocal training to help you get there in a way that feels true to your voice.
This partnership creates a space where you can grow at your own pace, without pressure, and with all the support you need. Together, we’ll explore your voice, and you’ll see how capable you are when given the freedom to learn in a safe vocal coaching environment.
"Have you ever had a coach who rushed you through lessons or focused too much on perfection?"
I’ve experienced this too. Sometimes, a coach’s priorities don’t align with the student’s needs. One common issue is an overemphasis on perfection. I’ve had coaches who were overly focused on whether I was perfectly on pitch, which caused me to focus on the wrong issue at hand. Instead of thinking about what made me off pitch, I became fixated on the result. Now with years of coaching, most of the time the vocal technique is the probable cause of why the pitch was not accurate, that is what the coach is for.
With that realisation, in my vocal lessons, I focus on understanding the root causes of challenges. For example, pitch issues can stem from tension in the body, improper breath support, or a lack of connection between your chest and head voice. A good vocal coach helps you uncover and address these deeper issues, rather than simply correcting surface-level mistakes.
Understanding the Bigger Picture in Vocal Training
As a coach, I know that sometimes we focus on perfecting something to gauge a student’s level of understanding. But it’s crucial to ensure that this focus aligns with the student’s goals and isn’t driven by the coach’s preferences. I’ve seen coaches unintentionally project their own vocal struggles onto students.
This is why I involve my students in the decision-making process. If we focus on something specific, I’ll ask, “Do you feel ready to work on this? Does this make sense to you?” This ensures that vocal training feels like a collaborative journey, where both coach and student are working towards a common goal with full understanding.
"Do you find it difficult to ask questions during vocal lessons?"
For many students, asking questions in the middle of a lesson can feel intimidating. I’ve experienced this too. As a student, I often focused so much on absorbing what was being taught that I didn’t realise I had questions until later, after the lesson while going through the process. This is completely normal, and it’s something I always consider when working with my students.
At the beginning of each lesson, I always start with a recap of the previous session. I ask the student to share what stood out to them and if there’s anything they’d like to revisit. This helps me gauge what concepts have resonated and opens up space for any questions or areas that may need further clarification.
I encourage my students to reach out anytime they have questions, even if it’s after the lesson. The real learning happens when you’re practising on your own, and that’s when questions often arise. Whether through WhatsApp, Telegram, or email, I’m here to help. If you hit a roadblock or feel unsure about something, I’ll support you in moving forward.
Ongoing Support Beyond the Vocal Lesson
Open communication is key to your success in vocal training. I want my students to feel supported not just during lessons but also in between. If you’re unsure about something or need clarification, a quick text or audio message can help you get back on track. When it comes to asking questions, remember there’s no such thing as a silly question. I’m here to make sure you understand the material and feel confident as you progress.
"Have you ever left a vocal lesson feeling more discouraged than encouraged?"
I’ve had lessons where I left feeling like I hadn’t made enough progress. Sometimes, this happened because I focused too much on what I hadn’t done perfectly, rather than acknowledging the progress I had made. I take this seriously in my coaching. I make it a point to ensure that every student leaves each lesson feeling a sense of accomplishment, no matter where they are in their journey.
At the end of each session, I summarise what we covered and highlight your progress. Often, we record key parts of the lesson so you can watch yourself successfully perform a vocal technique. This gives you a visual and auditory reminder of your achievements, building your confidence.
Building Positive Self-Talk in Vocal Training
I also help my students focus on positive self-talk during practice. Your inner dialogue can either build you up or hold you back. If you catch yourself thinking, “I can’t hit that note,” we’ll work on reframing it to, “What can I adjust to hit that note?” This shift turns doubt into an actionable step toward improvement. In my lessons, we focus on using self-talk as a tool for vocal growth.
"How do I ensure every student feels seen and supported?"
Making sure each student feels seen and supported is at the heart of my teaching. When you get something right, I don’t just give generic praise—I make sure you understand exactly why it worked. We break it down step by step, focusing on how your body, mind, and heart worked together. This helps you replicate that success on your own.
I also take detailed notes for each student using Notion. Every student has a personalised link to their session notes, which I update after each lesson. This allows you to track your progress, review what we covered, and prepare for the next session. In between lessons, you can also submit audio recordings of your practice, and I provide feedback on each one. This level of attention ensures that your vocal training is personalised to your specific needs.
"Were you ever pushed to sing in a way that didn’t feel natural for you?"
Yes, I’ve experienced this firsthand. During my second year of performing arts school, I had a teacher who pushed me into singing in a style that aligned with her own preferences, rather than helping me explore what was natural for my voice. This was incredibly frustrating and left me feeling unseen.
That experience shapes how I teach today. I never push my students into a style or technique that doesn’t feel natural for them. Instead, we work together to explore your voice and discover what feels authentic to you. Singing is a deeply personal expression, and I believe that connection is key to progress. You should feel empowered to sing the songs you connect with, and I’m here to guide you in a way that aligns with your true voice, not someone else’s.
